HRM or Human Resource Management is the approach to managing people within a company or organization to help a business gain a competitive advantage. Human Resource Management consists of tools that are designed to maximize the use of employee data such that it meets a company’s objectives.

Although this might sound like a challenge to most businesses, there’s a number of incredibly powerful software tools that can vastly improve the management and care of employees. Even better, some of those HRM tools can be installed on servers within your data center.

By taking that route, you don’t ever have to be concerned about a third party having access to your employee data. For any company that is serious about privacy and security, that alone would be worth the price of entry for a new Human Resource Management tool. And given a number of these platforms are free, the proposition becomes even more appealing.

HRM platforms include tools like:

  • Employee Information Management
  • Recruitment and Hiring
  • Employee onboarding
  • Talent Management
  • Benefits Management
  • Financial Management
  • Time and Attendance Management
  • Learning and Professional Development
  • Accounting

Now, before we lay out our listing of HRM tools, you should know that some of them are installed on Linux servers. Although any good admin would be able to successfully make this happen, if your IT staff isn’t up to the task, you could always turn to outsourcing software development, such as companies like BairesDev, who could successfully put together a team (or even a single software engineer) to make this happen.

With that said, let’s take a look at some of the HRM software titles that can be installed in your company data center.

OrangeHRM

OrangeHRM offers one of the most user-friendly HRM platforms on the market, which also happens to be quite expansive in its feature set. You’ll find this offering covers nearly every HRM need you have, with an included employee self-service functionality that can save precious time and effort on the management side of things.

OrangeHRM offers enterprise and open source versions of their platform. The difference between the two is that the open-source (aka community) version of the platform doesn’t include modules for:

  • Training
  • Asset tracking
  • On- and off-boarding
  • Mobile access
  • Dashboard
  • Custom user roles

OrangeHRM is used by a number of universities across the globe, as well as enterprise-level businesses. For smaller companies, the community version would serve as an ideal solution for HRM needs. For larger companies, OrangeHRM is scalable, so it is capable of meeting your needs as your company grows.

You can use OrangeHRM with a free trial. If you want to continue using it you’ll either have to switch to the community version or contact OrangeHRM for a custom quote.

Sentrifugo

Sentrifugo might have an unfamiliar name, but the features it offers are quite familiar to those who depend on Human Resource Management to keep their business humming. This open-source platform includes the usual bells and whistles of recruiting, employee leave management, reviews, analytics, expense management, employee information management, background checks, talent acquisition, interview scheduling, asset management, and disciplinary.

This platform even includes a service desk, to make your company HR processes even more efficient. Given that Sentrifugo is free, that’s an impressive list of features.

This particular take on the HRM can be installed on a Linux server in your data center in under 10 minutes. If your admin team doesn’t have the Apache or MariaDB skills necessary, you can always turn to an outsourced IT team to make this happen. Either way, once you have Sentrifugo up and running, your HRM tasks will be exponentially easier.

Odoo

Odoo is another open-source HRM solution with an odd name. But like the competition, Odoo offers an impressive array of features that are sure to make Human Resource Management a walk in the park for most companies.

One of the big differences between Odoo and the other tools on this list is that with this platform, you install the base system and then add modules to expand the feature set. Nearly every one of the modules has an associated monthly cost, but none too high as to price them out of your reach.

The module list includes the likes of CRM ($24.00 USD/month), invoicing ($12.00 USD/month), sales ($12.00 USD/month), eCommerce ($12.00 USD/month), accounting ($24.00 USD/month), timesheets ($12.00 USD/month), time off ($12.00 USD/month), recruitment ($12.00 USD/month), documents ($24.00 USD/month), and employee referral ($12.00 USD/month).

Not every module is directly related to HRM, so you can expand this system such that it could fulfill multiple roles.

ADempiere

ADempiere is another tool that goes beyond HRM needs. In fact, this platform can take care of your ERP, CRM, MFG, SCM, and POS needs. Once installed, you’ll find tools for sales, purchasing, manufacturing, material management, finance, HRM, project management, and maintenance management. So for any company that’s looking for a solution that will serve a number of areas, this might be what you’re looking for.

And ADempiere is free, so it’s certainly worth looking into, especially if your business is cash-strapped. ADempiere is such an outstanding tool that not only will your HR department be thankful for its existence within your company, but a number of other departments will also happily make use of its feature set as well.

Just make sure you have someone in your IT department that knows how to install Java because this platform requires it. Another caveat to ADempiere is that the documentation is really, really sparse, so be prepared to do a bit of research to get this up and running.

Conclusion

You’ll find tons of HRM solutions available for your company. Of those solutions, the list gets significantly shorter for those that can be installed in your data center. That doesn’t mean, however, those platforms aren’t worthy of your attention. In fact, some of the entries on that shortlist of data center-ready HRM platforms might well be the best on the market.
